Today in Plenty

Push off. Bit of a tight corner. One helluva spot.

Those poor parachutists I do know how they feel even now. Cities, fields, trees, farms, dark spaces, nights. Parachutes open. We descend.

May (s)he rest...

Michael Jackson was an entertainment legend who molested or at the very least exploited children. One of the greatest dancers/performers of all time, he never came to terms with his lost childhood or embraced elusive adulthood. Not a boy, never quite a man, he lived in perpetuity in an arrested development -- at once promise fulfilled as well as unrealized potential. This was an extraordinarily blessed and accomplished individual who nevertheless followed the sad trajectory of what turned out to be an ordinary, oedipal, tragic prologue of a life.

But damn it if Off the Wall isn't one of the finest albums EVER made.

*sniffle*

P.S. Condolences to the family & friends of another entertainment icon who also passed away today, Farrah Fawcett.

They always seem to go in pairs, don't they?

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a (Birth)day

Birthday wishes are in order for the lovely & amazing Franny McDormand, who is 52 (!!!) years young today -- and whom I tragically missed on Broadway in The Country Girl last summer *sobs*.

Has there ever been a better actress more adept at black comedy than she? Hollywood rarely uses her (well) anymore -- P.S. Why?! -- but wow, what an impressive streak of affecting and/or brilliantly caustic performances she's given in the last quarter century.
Among them:

Quite a resume, and that doesn't even include her banner performances in noir masterpieces by the Coen brothers -- Joel is her hubby -- like Blood Simple, Fargo (arguably her best), The Man Who Wasn't There and, most recently, Burn After Reading.

But to me, Miss McDormand always will be "Dot" from Raising Arizona (my sentinmental fave).

"Oh! He's an angel! He's an angel straight from heaven!"

Michelle Pfeiffer Sounds Off

I don't "get" InStyle (figuratively or literally -- it's completely derivative and just a weird hodgepodge in general), but when Michelle Pfeiffer is on the cover I let my reservation fall by the wayside and just go with it.

God, has there ever been a more preternatural beauty on earth (let alone in Hollywood)? If so, I defy you to show me.

The article itself is standard boilerplate, and I hate how La Pfeiffer gets grilled on defying age and growing older in this and every other interview over the last 10 years. Enough already! Just let her be the exceptional beauty/talent she is without condition.
[Sigh]

Today in "Brick Phones"

Remember those big ol' crazy cell phones from the late 80's/early 90's? You know, the ones that were as big as bricks? (Well, at least their batteries were.)

Tracy Morgan is apparently channeling them but unfortunately it's not for 30 *swoon* Rock. Why can't he be funny anywhere else?

Speaking of ginormous phones, Mark-Paul Gosselaar's resurrection of Zach Morris was CHOICE! If you didn't see it, you need to -- like, now:

P.S. Jimmy Fallon's petition to reunite the cast of 'Saved by the Bell' (http://tvseriesfinale.com/articles/saved-by-the-bell-jimmy-fallon-reunion) -- as if they have better opportunities on the horizon -- is a cause we ALL should support. Go Bayside!

You're so 2000 and late!

What's more tired than quoting an overused lyric of an already played out song? Starting to blog (formally) approximately 6 years after it was en vogue.

Oh well, I'm that unusual late comer/early adopter hybrid. At times the former, other times the latter. Actually joined Twitter months -- or was it a year? -- before Facebook (in 2007). Glommed onto Napster during my early college days...uh, 10+ years ago (!!!), yet eshewed the social networking bandwagon (minus GeoCities -- haha) until 2005. Oh the weird, twisted web of contradictions and unpredictability we weave!

So here's my committedly-not-half-assed stab toward building "personal brand equity" (who cares, right?) but, more to the point, giving these multiple personalities someone else to chat with -- the great ether.

2000 and late, indeed.
